    27 of the 37 bags use a water-resistant word somewhere. On most it describes the outer fabric, on a few only a pocket or the shoe pouch. Either way it means a shower on the walk from the car, not a swim.

  • Shoes kept apart

    19 bags give shoes their own pocket, tunnel or pouch, so grit stays off the folded shirts next to them.

  • Laptop sleeves

    Padded sleeves are named for 14", 15.6" and 17.3" screens. Nothing in between, so measure yours first.

We started with a suit that needed to stay smooth. We laid the garment flat inside a full-length sleeve, added side panels with sturdy zippers, and shaped the closed bag into a round duffel. Your jacket forms the outer wall, so it never gets folded in half.

On a two-night stay, you unpack by unzipping the main cylinder and hanging the entire piece in the closet. Your shoes stay in the side tunnel, away from your fresh shirts.

How to pack

Loading a garment duffel, in order

  1. Lay the suit flat

    Unzip the duffel all the way until it rests flat on your bed. Slide your jacket and trousers on a hanger into the garment loop, then secure the inner strap.

  2. Zip the side walls

    Pull the side zippers upward to form the round duffel cavity. The garment sleeve curves naturally along the outer shell without creating a sharp horizontal crease in your fabric.

  3. Slide shoes in endwise

    Tuck your dress shoes or court sneakers into the exterior side pocket. The separate lining extends into the main cavity while keeping dirt off your folded shirts and ties.

  4. Load the core cavity

    Drop your dopp kit, socks, and extra sweater into the center opening. Pull the top zipper shut and attach the padded shoulder strap before you head out the door.
